Padre Pio

1887 - 1968

Prayer

God, Giver of all good gifts, you generously endowed your servant, Pio of Pietreicina, with the gifts of the Spirit, signing his body as living witness to the saving Passion and Death of your Son.  As many looked upon this reflection of your Crucified Son, Jesus, they experienced anew your saving mercy.  As through his ministry, Pio reconciled penitents and invited them to taste your sweetness in the Holy Eucharist, so enable us through his intercession, to follow his example in prayer and penance so that we too may follow our Risen Lord and rejoice in His Kingdom where He lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever...Amen.

Padre Pio was born of simple, hardworking farming people on May 25, 1887 in Pietrelcina, southern Italy.  He was tutored privately until his entry to the novitiate of the Capuchin Friars at the age of 15.  Of feeble health but strong will, with the help of grace he completed the required studies and was ordained a priest in 1910.

On September 20, 1918 the five wounds of Our Lord's Passion appeared on his body, making him the first stigmatized priest in the history of the Church.  Countless numbers were attracted to his confessional and many more received his saintly counsel and spiritual guidance through correspondence.  His whole life was marked by long hours of prayer and continual austerity.  His letters to his spiritual directors reveal the ineffable sufferings, physical and spiritual, which accompanied him all through life.  They also reveal his very deep union with God, his burning love for the Blessed Eucharist and Our Blessed Lady.  Worn out by over half a century of intense suffering and constant apostolic activity in San Giovanni Rotondo, he was called to his heavenly reward on September 23, 1968.  After a public funeral, which attracted almost 100,000, his body was entombed in the crypt of Our Lady of Grace Church.  Increasing numbers flock to his tomb from all parts of the world and many testify to spiritual and temporal graces received.  On May 2, 1999 Pope John Paul II beatified Padre Pio in ceremonies at the Vatican.  June 16, 2002, Padre Pio of Pietrelcina was solemnly canonized a Saint by Pope John Paul II.

Hail, Holy Queen, our mother of mercy...our life, our sweetness, and our hope. To thee do we cry poor banished children of Eve.  To thee do we set up our sighs, morning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn thee then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us, and after this, our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet virgin Mary...Pray for us O loving mother of God that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ...Amen.

St. Joseph, foster father of Jesus, pray for us.

    Prayer for Padre Pio's Intercession

Gracious God, You generously blessed Your servant, Padre Pio, with the gifts of the Spirit.  You marked his body with the five wounds of Christ Crucified, as a powerful witness to the saving Passion and Death of Your Son, and as a stirring inspiration to many people of Your infinite mercy, forgiveness, and love.

In the confessional, Padre Pio labored endlessly for the salvation of souls.  Through his prayerful intercession, many who suffered were healed of sickness and disease.

Endowed with the gift of discernment, he could read people's hearts.  From the blood of his wounds came a perfumed fragrance, a special sign of Your Holy Presence.  With dignity and intense devotion, he celebrated daily Mass, inviting countless men and women to a greater union with Jesus Christ, in the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist.

Through the intercession of Padre Pio, I confidently beseech You to grant me the grace of (here state your petition).  Help me to imitate his example of prayerful holiness and compassion, so that I, too, may faithfully follow the Risen Lord, and one day rejoice in the Kingdom, where You live and reign forever and ever...Amen.
